Eine schöne Geschichte in der neuen Ausgabe der "National Archives News": Gastforscher Roelof van Gelder aus den Niederlanden hatte unter den Akten ein zweihundert Jahre altes Notizbuch gefunden, in dem vierzig kleine Pakete mit Samen verschiedener Pflanzenarten enthalten waren. ExpertInnen von der Millennium Seed Bank der Royal Botanic Gardens haben diese Samen wieder zum Leben erweckt: "The notebook was inscribed with the name Jan Teerlink, a Dutch merchant who is believed to have collected the seeds during a trip to the Cape of Good Hope in 1804".
Das weltweit angelegte Millennium Seed Project "aims to safeguard 24,000 plant species from around the globe against extinction. It has already successfully secured the future of virtually all the UK's native flowering plants".
